Nanotoxicology is the learning of the toxicity of nanomaterials. Because of quantum size properties and large surface area to volume percentage, nanomaterials have unique properties compared with their larger counterparts that affect their toxicity. Nanotoxicology is a sub-specialty of particle toxicology. Nanomaterials look to have toxicity effects that are unusual and not perceived with larger particles. For example, even inert elements like gold develop highly active at nanometer extents. Nanotoxicological educations are proposed to determine whether and to what extent these properties may pose a threat to the environment and to human beings.
